X-Mas Bomber Due In Court

Attorneys for a man accused of trying to blow up a plane last X-mas have met with the prosecutors to discuss a possible deal in the case, federal court documents state.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is due in court for a pretrial hearing Monday. The British-educated son of a Nigerian bank executive is suspected of trying to set off a bomb hidden in his underwear aboard a plane from Amsterdam, Netherlands, to Detroit, Michigan, on December 25, 2009.

“Counsel have met on multiple occasions with government counsel to discuss options for resolution of the case,” the court filing by Abdulmutallab’s attorneys states. “Counsel have met in person and by phone.”

Abdulmutallab’s attorneys also noted they have only been able to meet with the defendant once a week for two hours at a time.

Abdulmutallab was detained when other passengers noticed his clothes burning from his attempt to set off the device.

He is charged with six counts, including attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and willful attempt to destroy an aircraft.
