Wisconsin: Torah Academy girls school expanding

Officials of a small Jewish high school for girls have proposed building a new facility at Green Tree and Green Bay roads. Torah Academy of Milwaukee has 42 girls enrolled in the school now located in the basement of the building at 6789 N. Green Bay Ave.

The proposal is to build a 10,000-square-foot building on the other side of the street, east of where the school is now located.

The new single-story building would have several classrooms, an all-purpose room, a teachers lounge, a place for worship and a computer room.

The property is currently zoned for development as office space and assessed at $313,000. Its owners pay $6,603 in taxes. If rezoned for use as a high school, the property would be tax-exempt but the developers have agreed to pay the city portion of the property tax bill.

The Plan Commission will review and make a recommendation on the rezoning request.
