Did a Tornado Touchdown In Riverdale?

NYC’s Office of Emergency Management has asked the National Weather Service to inspect the damage from yesterday’s severe storms in Riverdale to see if there is any evidence that a tornado touched down.

The brief, but intense thunderstorm brought down trees and knocked out power to thousands of customers.

Work crews have been busy removing downed trees.

The storm lasted only about 10 minutes, but it left a trail of destruction in its wake.

“The rain was going around in a circle and all. Blasted through here; never saw so much rain coming down the hill here,” said one local resident. “And all the damage, next block up there a big tree down.”

“It was pretty rough, just getting home about, you know, 10 blocks, it was a trip,” said another.

“And then the next I knew, half the top of this tree toppled and there’s a tree in the back that toppled,” said a third. “All the trees were coming down.”

As of early this morning, more than 600 Consolidated Edison customers were without power.

The utility says it hopes to have power restored to most of those affected by later today.

  1. I am not sure about Riverdale but I do know that in Bergenfield we had a 15 minute storm which knocked down powerlines, trees and what not. It sure looks like a tornado touched down. But I have to give credit to PSE&G they’ve down a pretty good job getting out their crew so fast and restored most houses within hours.

  2. 1) “It was pretty rough, just getting home about, you know, 10 blocks, it was a trip” How long was the trip?
    2) “And then the next I knew, half the top of this tree toppled and there’s a tree in the back that toppled,” said a third. “All the trees were coming down.” If all the trees were coming down why single out the one in the back that toppled?!?
