Smoke Forces Evacuation Of Statue Of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty was evacuated Wednesday after the fire department responded to a call shortly after 1:15 p.m.

A serious smoke condition arose when a malfunction within an elevator caused its motor to overheat.

According to the Parks Department, there were several hundred people in the Statue at the time, and they were evacuated by way of stairs.

The Statue of Liberty remains closed, although Liberty Island is still open.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.
