Rabbi Weinreb to stay at the OU

ou logo.jpgThe OU has reversed course and extended the contract of Rabbi Tzvi Hersh Weinreb, its executive vice president, for two more years. Rabbi Weinreb’s contract was set to expire this summer and a search committee had been established to find a replacement. The committee has since disbanded.

OU President Stephen Savitsky said that the change was prompted solely by the need to undertake a strategic planning effort before hiring new leadership.

But sources at the group said a groundswell of support for Weinreb, which began after it became clear that his departure wasn’t entirely voluntary, led to the extension until summer 2009. Opposition to Weinreb’s departure is said to have formed after a January article revealed that he did not want to step down.

  1. Forgive me if I am being cynical and judging this incorrectly, but why do we need to know about more machlokes in Klal Yisrael? What do we gain by knowing there seems to be some internal division among its members?

Couldn’t the article have left it at “there was a search committee but it has been disbanded and his contract has been extended 2 more years”?

  2. Rabbi Weinreb is a true asset the OU and to K’lal Yisroel. He brings people of various affiliations and backgrounds together and makes a Kiddush Hashem wherever he speaks. I applaude the OU for extending Rabbi Weinreb’s contract.
