Agreeing with prosecutors that no amount of bail could ensure the two terror suspects arrested Saturday at JFK International Airport wouldn’t try to leave the U.S. or ensure the public’s safety, Judge Madeline Arleo Cox denied the two suspects bail this morning in a Newark courtroom.

These charges of the “most serious nature,” Arleo Cox said, noting they are supported by credible “evidence.”

Share Mohamed Mahmood Alessa, 20, of North Bergen, and Carlos Eduardo Almonte, 24, of Elmwood Park, were arrested Saturday and charged with conspiracy to kill, maim, and kidnap persons outside of the United States, the result of an investigation that began four years ago.

With his hands and legs shackled today in court, Alessa looked at the packed courtroom and smiled, while his mother sobbed.

Arleo Cox pointed out that Alessa has dual citizenship with Jordan and has flown there in the past when she denied bail. Alessa and Almonte were arrested as they prepared to fly to Egypt and then to Somalia.
