Baby Pulled From Staten Island Swimming Pool In Critical Condition

A toddler is in critical condition after nearly drowning Saturday in a backyard swimming pool on Staten Island.

Police say 18-month-old Vincent Fougere was pulled from the water before rescue crews arrived at the home in Tottenville.

Neighbors said they heard people yelling when the family discovered the toddler’s unconscious body in the water.

“I heard screaming I saw several people. He had his hands on his head. I told my daughter to get out of the way. They kept saying ‘My child, my child he drowned.’ They kept saying ‘He’s not breathing, he’s not breathing.’ So I immediately raced up the street to the fire department. I wanted to get the fire department down here if they haven’t already come,” said one neighbor.

“When we got down there the baby was on the side of the pool and wasn’t breathing and was no pulse and we started going to work right away on the baby as far as doing mouth to mouth and CPR on the baby,” said New York City Firefighter Matthew Gianone.

The toddler is being treated at Staten Island University Hospital.
