Senator Kirsten Gillibrand outlined legislation Sunday to outlaw the manufacture, sale, resale and distribution of all drop-side cribs.
The measure would also ban the cribs from daycare centers and hotels.
The cribs have a side rail that moves up and down, and are blamed in the deaths of at least 32 infants or toddlers since 2000 who suffocated or were strangled.
More than 1.5 million of these cribs have been recalled this year alone.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has pledged to ban the cribs, but it could be next year before that takes effect.
Industry executives claim the cribs are safe when assembled and used properly.
