A member of parliament in the United Kingdom, Stephen Timms of the Labour Party, has been stabbed, the party press office said Friday.

A 21-year-old woman has been arrested after Labour MP Stephen Timms was stabbed while holding his constituency “surgery” in Beckton, east London.

Mr Timms, a former junior Treasury minister, was stabbed in the chest but is understood to be in a stable condition after being taken to hospital.

The incident happened around 3.20pm as Mr Timms, who has been MP for East Ham, was holding his weekly surgery.
