Whipping Winds Down Trees, Power Lines Across Tri-State Area

Whipping winds wreaked havoc across the tri-state on Shabbos. Sustained winds of 40 miles per hour knocked down trees and tore down power lines across the region.

In Midtown, streets had to be cleared and traffic diverted after pieces of scaffolding plummeted to the ground.

The common culprit was the fierce wind that even sent scaffolding flying off of a building on 57th Street. The collapse forced evacuations, but thankfully missed pedestrians.

The whipping winds also have power companies in the tri-state working overtime, with downed power lines knocking out service all over the area.

As of late Saturday night, almost 10,000 Con Edison customers in New York City and Westchester County were without power. Almost 12,000 Connecticut Light and Power customers were in the dark, while LIPA had more than 5,000 customers without service. Power was out for more than 18,000 Jersey City Power and Light customers as well.
