St. Vincent’s Announces 1,000 Layoffs; Lawsuit Planned

More than 1,000 pink slips were handed out Monday as St. Vincent’s Hospital prepares to close its doors for good.

In a released statement, the hospital says, “As part of the safe and orderly wind down of operations at St. Vincent’s Hospital, over 1,000 staff members were laid off today. St. Vincent’s Hospital is deeply grateful for their years of dedication and service, especially during these difficult times.”

The news came on the same day civil rights lawyer Yetta Kurland announced plans to file a lawsuit against the 160-year-old Greenwich Village institution.

The former City Council candidate says the cash-strapped hospital is in violation of New York law because it is shutting down before the State Department of Health approves its closing plan.

The lawsuit is expected to be filed Tuesday in State Supreme Court.

According to letters sent out by Saint Vincent’s last week, the two-week termination period officially begins Tuesday.

Workers say the hospital’s closing is in complete disarray and they blame management.

Saint Vincent’s filed for bankruptcy last week and has stopped accepting all inpatient admissions and elective operations.

Walk-in emergency room patients are being sent to other hospitals.

  1. If the hospital has filed for bankruptcy, the law suit has to be heard in bankruptcy court. Also, what do they expect to get (the right to be a low priority unsecured creditor of a bankrupt corporation facing liquidation???).

Perhaps this is a publicity stunt by the lawyer?
