According to officials there have not been any Jews living in Zvolen since the Holocaust but someone decided the Jewish cemetery is bothersome, breaking into the gates and spray painting remaining tombstones with hate graffiti.
Most of the former Jewish community’s 700 residents, who perished during the Holocaust, are buried in the cemetery. Most of the 500 tombstones have been stolen over the years. Ten survivors from Zvolen are currently living in Israel.
While the cemetery was declared a heritage site by Zvolen officials’ years ago, nothing is really done to preserve or protect the cemetery, and during past years, tombstones have been stolen from the sight. Israeli diplomatic officials have filed a complaint following the latest anti-Semitic attack, but in reality, no one really expects anything to be done.
