Hitchhiking Upstate NY From Monsey? Don’t Stand On The Thruway!

People hitchhiking on the NYS Thruway are risking a hefty ticket, and endangering lives, the NYS Thruway Authority says.

According to Special Assistant to the Superintendent of the NYSP Rabbi Bernard Freilich, people from the community have recently increased their hitchhiking activities, and have started standing on the Thruway at Exit 14B (Airmont Road) in Monsey NY.

“Some people stand on the shoulder, and others are standing on the exit/entrance ramp as well”, Rabbi Freilich says.

Richard F. Newhouse, Assistant New York Division Director, Operations of the New York State Thruway Authority tells YWN that people must stop hitchhiking immediately, or face fines from the NYSP who will start enforcing this immediately. In addition to private vehicles picking up and discharging passengers, private trucks have been witnessed exchanging merchandise on the Thruway Ramps at I-87 Interchange 14B.

“Besides being illegal, it is a big Chillul Hashem, and many near-accidents have been witnessed from this behavior”, Rabbi Freilich says.

“If you want to hitch a ride upstate NY, you must use private property”.

  1. I would think that someone familiar with the area and the need, would designate a specific location in the area where people looking for rides can wait. And hopefully drivers with empty seats could pass by and pick up passengers.
