Brooklyn – New York City Council candidate and education advocate David G. Greenfield announced a plan that would require every non-public school submit their entire staff to fingerprint criminal background checks by the NYPD just like public school employees. The plan, which would apply to every yeshiva in Brooklyn, was crafted with consultation with Das Torah. Currently, yeshivas have no criminal background check requirement for their employees that would prevent criminals from being employed. This plan will give parents the confidence that their children are in a school with no criminals.
“When parents send their children to yeshiva, they trust that they are sending their children to a safe place for them to learn. There is nothing more important than keeping our children safe,” said Greenfield. “Keeping child predators and criminals out of our yeshivas is common sense legislation. When elected I will introduce legislation mandating criminal background checks for all yeshiva employees.”
Unlike other elected officials, Greenfield consulted with Das Torah before releasing this plan.
“The issue of abuse is serious and must be addressed accordingly.” Greenfield added. “When I am elected to the City Council, I will work collaboratively with our rabbonim and mosdos to combat this horrendous crime and ensure that our children are safe and secure.”

I agree. It really is about time. I hope this means all Rabbeim and teachers. Any employee in a yeshivah should be fingerprinted. If anyone doesn’t like it, its probably because he is hiding something.
Id like them to make another rule. Shomer Negiah. No teachers/Rabbeim may physically touch a student. No need for pats on the back…find other ways to show fondness that don’t involve touching!

Not only did the Agudah fight against this bill in 2006, but they have been fighting against it ever since! Now that they think it will help Greenfield win, they are telling him they will support it.
The title and the details don’t seem to match.
Those criminal teachers who were not yet caught won’t necessarily have police records of interest to come up by their fingerprints.
If former criminals are no longer criminals, then why should their police records be relevant? If they are still criminals aren’t then in jail or under house arrest and not able to work in schools?
This does nothing to protect students from crimes perpetrated by other than repeat-offender teachers. New York public schools have tremendous numbers of crimes perpetrated by students.
If the title said “safer” or “safe from crimes by teachers with criminal records” I would not have felt a comment necessary.
Perhaps there are particular crimes this proposed law has in mind that would have been prevented?
Great law. Let’s fingerprint all our great Rebeim. Genius. But meanwhile in the scorching summer heat all these wondeful children that Greenfield is protecting from the Rebeim that cannot afford to go to summer camp at 3000 at each will unfortunately swelter it out by not being able to veer near the shoreline because as of yet not one of our remarkable Jewish politicians spitzer bloomberg schumer hikind lazar greenfield felder shall I go on has taken a minute out of his busy schedule of fingerprinting Rebeim (which was a real easy one to get by the Goyim council-they just love this one) in order to tell the Parks Department to set aside a couple of blocks of modest beaches – beaches that we own as citizens -but cannot use-for a hundred thousand upstanding citizens – Adath Yeshurun- to use. This fact is disturbing enough to sever the chords of reason and logic in anyones brain- to the point of which we can honestly beg Hashem: Send us a politician that can actually see what the people are going through. I know your answers. Mothers walking strollers with three kids in 90 degrees is a wonderful sight. That’s what they should be doing. Preparing food for Shabbos! Children on the hot city streets all summer without a break. Sure they should stay indoors in air conditioning all day. Yes there are programs for them. But sadly no beach no shoreline. I’m not from Brooklyn but I could not agree more with this. It is about time someone pulled the stuff out from under the carpet there. People in Brooklyn are lucky to have someone like Greenfield.
