Wireless Internet may soon be coming to commuters on Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is asking developers to submit plans on how the service would be installed and operated.
The MTA is also looking to make Grand Central Terminal and Pennsylvania Station wireless, but it is unclear whether the service would be fee-based.
The LIRR waiting room at Penn Station is already equipped with Wi-Fi access.
Transit officials said they do not intend to pay for the service, opting instead to have a third-party company decide whether to charge commuters for the service.
Officials hope to have the service up and running by the end of the year.

Silly. 3G and soon 4G services (LTE/WiMax) are spreading rapidly and just about anyone who might use this will use those instead.
I myself have a cellphone with an unlimited data plan which I can use as a modem (with 2 Mbit/s download and 1 Mbit/s upload) through USB, Bluetooth, or as a WiFi router, and I also have an older dedicated 3G USB modem (soon to be retired).
Why would I use 3rd-party WiFi?
