Sources close to the state attorney general say that an investigation over whether Governor David Paterson tampered with a witness in a domestic abuse case against one of his top aides is still ongoing, and that it is premature to draw any conclusions.

The New York Daily News reported that investigators found that the accuser did not feel she was threatened by the governor in a phone conversation the day before she was due to appear in court seeking an order of protection against David Johnson.

Sources told the paper the conversations that Paterson’s staffers had with the woman were too vague to prove tampering.

Paterson said he did not discuss the case, and only asked the woman if there was anything he could do.

The sources told the Daily News that Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who is investigating the case, has yet to interview Paterson or Johnson.

Cuomo is also investigating charges the governor lied under oath about his intention to pay for free tickets he received for the first game of the World Series last year.
