Monticello, NY – Sullivan County Manager David Fanslau asked Governor David Paterson to issue a state declaration and request a federal disaster declaration related to the blizzard of 2010 that affected Sullivan County the last week of February.
During the course of 72 hours, some areas of Sullivan County got 4 ½ feet of snow and as a result, the county had to use “extensive resources” to insure the safety of county residents, said Fanslau.
Last weekend, February 26 through 28, some 120 members of Sullivan County’s snow removal crews put in up to 50 hours of overtime in three days. As a result of the storm, the county, towns and villages have spent a total of $439,000 to date in cleanup efforts, which Fanslau said exceeds the county’s cost threshold of $242,000 to receive emergency aid.
A state emergency declaration would be the first step necessary in order to seek federal disaster status and aid from Washington to help cover expenses.
