Judge Orders ‘Car Mitzvah’ For Orthodox Jewish Divorcing Couple

Brooklyn, NY – A divorcing couple can celebrate something together – their car mitzvah.

A Brooklyn judge ordered the dueling Orthodox Jewish duo to sell their clunker or donate it to charity – and equally divide the mitzvah, which means “worthy deed.”

“The parties have little. Nevertheless, whatever they have must be distributed,” Justice Matthew D’Emic said as he settled the bitter four-year battle between the two parties.

“The 2000 Buick Century is directed to be sold and the proceeds, if any, equally divided.

“If the car cannot be sold in its present condition it is to be donated to charity and the mitzvah equally divided,” D’Emic ruled.

The divorce was so contentious that D’Emic was the fourth judge to handle it. Much of his decision was devoted to child support and custody issues, but it was the judge’s ruling on the automobile that stood out.

“The car has little or no value,” said lawyer, Mark Holtzer. “I thought it was a creative solution.”

  1. A Judge (and a secular one no less!) cannot judicially ordain who will get the mitzvah. Since all marital belongings (other than what she brought from prior to the marriage) are the husbands property, he would get any mitzvah involved.

  2. “and equally divide the mitzvah, which means “worthy deed.”

actually, mitvah means commandment, but what can we expect from the daily snooze?

  3. How would anybody even know about a simple judge’s ruling to a regular couple. Something tells me that one of the parties involved looking for attention, passed this on to the media.

  4. Are they more concerned about the car or the children!
#1 has a point. This couple has come so far that perhaps if they were put on an island by themselves they may work it out.
There is no mention of Bais Din…or perhaps they were there too!
Maybe it would be a smart idea to give the children up for adoption so they’ll have more money!!
These children can make a childless couple happy and for them a stable life.
    Getting divorced is no picnic.
Some couples regret it very quickly when they realize life is not so rosy thereafter!!

  5. being that the car is a “2000” model, min hastam they got in in ’99. If they could just hold on to it for 2 more years, then it could have a CAR BAR Mitzvah!

  6. Where is the Beis Din. Orthodox Jews; sorry i don’t think so. They just dress orthodox since this is not the way to go to secular car

  7. even orthodox jews must sometimes involve the secular courts. what is wrong with all of you who are judging people that you dont even know based on a measly article written in a piece of trash newspaper? do you know for a fact that there was no bes din involved? do you know anything about their marriage and what led up to this point? i will not write anymore because i am so upset by post #9 that i may not be able to control what i write, and i would hate to say something hurtful out of anger. just remember 2 things- 1. “if you dont have anything nice to say, dont say anything at all” and 2. the way you judge people in this world is the way you will be judged in the world to come.

  8. The fact is that there was a Chusheve Baid Din involved and the wife ignored the hazmonas. Bais din gave a Heter Arkous so the father could see the kids that the wife prevented and then the wife kept the husband in court for 3 years so she could avoid the consequences of her actions which now will catch up with her.
