Two suspects associated with subway bomb plotter Najibullah Zazi were indicted today on new terrorism charges.
Adis Medunjanin and Zarein Ahmedzay are appearing in Brooklyn federal court today to face new charges that they assisted in the plot involving Zazi to attack the New York subway system in mid-September 2009.
The five-count superseding indictment unsealed this morning charges both Queens residents with conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction against persons or property in the United States.
According to the indictment, the attacks were planned for a Manhattan subway line on September 14th, 15th or 16th, 2009.
They face a maximum sentence of life in prison for that charge.
Additionally, they were both charged with providing material support, including currency, training and personnel to a foreign terrorist organization. The maximum penalty for this charge is 10 years in prison. They were also charged with conspiracy to commit murder in a foreign country, a charge that carries up to 15 years in prison.
Ahmedzay, 25, was indicted in January on charges that he lied to authorities about his travels with Zazi to Pakistan and Afghanistan in 2008.
Medujanin, also 25 , had been indicted in January on charges of conspiracy to commit murder in a foreign country and receiving military-type training from a foreign terrorist organization, namely al-Qaida.
Both had pleaded not guilty.
Zazi pleaded guilty on Monday to plotting to detonate bombs in the city’s subway system around the anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks.
The former Colorado airport shuttle driver is scheduled to be sentenced on June 25th, when he is expected to receive life in prison without parole.
Zazi’s father, uncle, and a Queens imam all face charges related to obstructing the investigation.
