With money to spare and endorsements raining down faster than a summer thunderstorm, the two frontrunners in the special 44th District City Council race are galloping toward the March 23 election.
The district covers Borough Park and parts of Bensonhurst, Midwood and Kensington.
According to recent filings with the city’s Campaign Finance Board, David Greenfield leads all four candidates running with $135,570 raised while his chief opponent, Joe Lazar raised $118,515.
Both candidates should easily qualify for the maximum 6-to-1 matching grants of $92,400.
Probably not qualifying for the maximum matching grants are Republicans Jonathan Judge, who raised $3,261 and Kenneth Rice who raised $975.
Greenfield, who previously has been endorsed by Mayor Mike Bloomberg, picked up another big endorsement from Connecticut Sen. Joe Leiberman last week.
More important, Greenfield is showing he has some base in Borough Park, where six prominent educators/rabbis from the Bobov, Pupa, Munkatsch, Boyan and Krasne Hasidic sects recently sent out a letter of endorsement.
Greenfield also has the support of Bobov law professor Harry Tzvi Reicher.
Educators in Borough Park are supporting Greenfield for his work in getting legislation passed giving parents of kids in yeshivas and other private schools tax credit refunds, said Reicher.
Lazar, who enjoys the strong support of Assemblymember Dov Hikind, also released a letter of support from more than 100 leaders from the Borough Park and Flatbush community.
“Those (signatories) are prominent people and a cross section of the entire 44th District, men and women representing thousands of people that support Joe Lazar,” said Hikind.
“Joe Lazar is a great candidate with great credentials. He’s not as pretty as Greenfield, that I give Greenfield and not as flippant as Greenfield. The point is this race is really about experience, and if you look at the two in terms of experience it’s not even close,” said Hikind.
Hikind’s strong endorsement has a personal edge as Greenfield once served as his chief of staff and the two did not have a smooth parting of ways.
Additionally, Hikind, a 28-year assembly member, wants to maintain his role as Borough Park’s most prominent political leader.
“Clearly Greenfield is making significant inroads into the base of Dov Hikind stronghold, and the onus is now going to be on Dov to prove he is the undisclosed kingmaker,” saidone highly placed Borough Park source who is staying neutral in the race.
The source said whileLazar remains the favorite, the race remains up in the air.
“The Lazar campaign feels very confident, but nothing is guaranteed,” said another source who backs Lazar. “Elections are won and lost in the last two weeks. Especially in a special election.”

I COULD NOT HAVE SAID ANY BETTER MYSELF . ALL DOV WANTS IS TO BE THE UNDISCLOSED KING-MAKER OF BORO RARK NO MATTER HOW IT GETS DONE AND WHO GETS HURT.
did anyone ever think that maybe he said PETTY and not PRETTY???? this is a ridiculous article….
After what Hikind and Silver did to Nachman Caller we have to be stupid and blind to want Lazar, a Hikind puppet voted in.
Hinkind’s support means zero. Let him spend time in the Assembly where we elected him to serve.
Att. #3 I have personally spoken to Mr. Lazar and he is no Hikinds puppet, I think Dov this time maybe just this time wants what is good for the community, I wish to learn more about these two candidates. I know that YWN is affiliated with Mr. Greenfield but they should try to be more fare and balanced and let us know everything about the candidates and not putting one before the other. That is exactly what the mainstream media has done and look where we headed with the “Hope and Change for America”.
It seems like the only strong argument Mr. Greenfeld has(besides his power of PROMISING). Is that Dov Hikind is supporting Joe Lazar. So he is convincing everybody who hates Hikind to exercise their hate and vote for him.
Now if you want to make an intellectual decision as for who to vote and who is going to DO (NOT PROMISE) the most for private schools. Ask the Askonim that are in Albany all the time for our behalf, Like Agudah (who made sure that Bloomberg doesn’t take out the tuition vouchers from the budget) and other serious Askonim.
Some yeshiva administrators supported Greenfeld they have no idea how balancing the budget works in Albany. When the administrators where asked why they indorsed Greenfeld, they said that Greenfeld PROMISED…….
All real Askonim who work on our behalf to get all the programs we currently enjoy like, buses, lunch program, school vouchers, collage programs for our Yeshivas and many more indorse Joe Lazar.
I don’t know what you are talking about, Bobov did not come out with an endorsement yet, they are coming out with an endorsement on March 2′ no one know who they will endorse, it is a wait and and see thing. One thing is for sure if they endorse Greenfield then the race is over Greenfield wins
GO, you are on the ball! But I feel I need to correct on of your statements, although I think Agudah would prefer a Lazar victory they do not endorse candidates because it’s illegal for a 501c3 organization to do so and they probably don’t want to burn bridges with Greenfield in case he wins a future election.
rsofer, I think Hikind made Lazar his puppet because he knows Lazar is going to win, & it will show that he has the biggest influence of any frum elected official. Greenfield is better at PR though, I must say.
This is really simple. Lazar is a blue-blooded Boro Parker. He knows who we are, what we want, and what we need. Greenfield, speaking as though from a teleprompter, is more geared for the Five Towns or Forest Hills. Lazar has the experience, plus he has delivered for Mosdos big time in the past. Just ask anyone at Ohel, Mishkan, or Bikur Cholim of Boro Park. Greenfields major claim to fame is that he was part of some tuition tax credit enactment. Though I am not sure how little he actually contributed to that effort, most parents in Boro Park are not big time earners and they Boruch HaShem have larger families. Tax credits are meaniongless. Again, mabey that’s worth something to a modern orthodox family with only two children in the Five Towns. But not here.
When Lazar talks, he is talking to me. When Greenfield talks, he is speaking to someone in Long Island. Boro Parkers !!! You know what you have to do !!!!
Insider,
Does Joe Lazar live in BP? Actually not.
Joe Lazar may be good but the fact that Hikind is on him doesn’t pass the smell test.
What did he do for us? Tuition IS a major issue beside Health Care and if you don’t pay tuition and are on Section 8 and don’t pay for Housing so we understand why you like Lazar
