Monsey, NY – Authorities say a body has been found in a Monsey park on Monday morning.
Investigators say the body was found at around 6 a.m. in the woods of Viola Park on West Maple Avenue.
According to LoHud.com, there was a small fire at the scene, and the Monsey Fire Department had been dispatched.
Authorities say it is not yet known who the victim is or who found the body.
Detectives from both the Rockland County Sheriff’s Department and the Ramapo Police Department are both at the scene investigating, along with K9, and dozens of other officers.
UPDATE: At a press conference Monday afternoon, police said the medical examiner is trying to determine cause of death and using dental records to investigate identity. Police earlier Monday had said the female was a teenager but at the press conference backed off from that determination in lieu of the medical examiners findings.
Investigators are tracking down missing person reports throughout the region and enlisting the help of other police agencies, authorities said.
Police and firefighters were called to the town of Ramapo park at 5:30 a.m. to investigate a report of a fire and discovered the burning body, said Ramapo police Lt. Brad Weidel.
Police don’t know if the victim was killed in the park or elsewhere but went to lengths at the press conference to assure the public that the park was safe and crime was not committed against a random parkgoer.

IT TOOK PLACE AT MENY WELIDER PARK BETTER KNOWN AS VIOLA PARK IT IS ON WEST MAPLE ROAD IT ALSO CONNECTS TO THE CONCORD NEIGHBORHOOD ( WHICH IS A FRUM NEIGHBORHOOD) THE CALL CAME IN AS A FIRE CALL BUT SOON AFTER THE FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED AT THE SCENE THEY DISCOVERED A FEMALE NON JEWISH BODY NOT IN THE FOREST BUT IN THE PARKING LOT OF THE PARK THEN CHAOS BROKE LOOSE THE SHERIFF WAS CALLED THE K9 UNITS THERE WAS A SHERIFF HELICOPTER IN THE AIR FOR LONG PERIOD OF TIME THE WHOLE AREA WAS SWARMING WHILE COPS IN MARKED CARS AND UNMARKED CARS THEY ALSO BROUGHT IN THE MOBILE COMMAND COMMUNICATION CENTER THEY SET UP A TENT OVER THE AREA OF THE VICTIM BODY THEY PLACED AN ORANGE SMALL FENCE AUROND THE BODY THE PARK WAS CAUTION OFF WITH POLICE TAPE AND THERE WERE COPS AT EVERY ENTRANCE
