Despite Challenges, Gov. Paterson’s In The Running

Despite low poll numbers, and a request from the White House to stay out of it, Governor David Paterson made his announcement to the state: “I’m running for governor.”

Just a few streets over from his childhood home in Hempstead, Governor David Paterson officially announced his intent to run for a full term in office.

“There’s one rumor that I will confirm – I’m running for governor this year, and we will win this year,” Paterson said.

Fighting back against the failing economy and inaction in Albany seemed to be the focus of Paterson’s campaign. This past month alone, the governor has lashed out at lawmakers for not responding to his calls to cut spending.

The governor spent much of his speech batting away scandalous rumors that have been swirling for months, but never proven.

“Innuendo and ridicule and false rumors can leave a long and lasting effect, and it’s no surprise that this comes in the beginning of a campaign, when the other candidate will do anything to win,” Paterson said.

The governor has been facing battles on several fronts. Most recently was the scandal that wasn’t – a story from the New York Times that was supposed to be so salacious, the governor would have to resign.

However, no such story was ever printed, and the governor went on the offensive. “The only way I’m not going to be governor next year is in the ballot box, and the only way that I’ll be leaving office before is in a box.”

The ballot box may be in play earlier than the governor would like. There has been speculation for months that the governor is facing a primary challenge from Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.

Although he has yet to declare a run, he leads Paterson in polls, endorsements, and money.

  1. I think he has turned out to be a poor leader …..but he does have the right to go for the office if he wants to. Let the people of NYS decide….I would be surprised if he survives a primary challenge by Andrew Coumo. As a life long Republican I again say Pete King for Governor.
