Iran is now a ‘nuclear state’, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced this morning.
He spoke as tens of thousands of people took to the streets in Tehran to mark the 31st anniversary of the Islamic revolution.
There are fears of violence as opposition and pro-government supporters are expected to meet at rallies in a show of popular strength unmatched since the revolution itself.
Today Ahmadinejad told scores of cheering Iranians that the Islamic Republic is capable of producing weapons-grade uranium.
He said it had produced its first batch of 20 per cent enriched uranium – and had the capability to enrich to far higher levels at its Natanz plant.
‘We have the capability to enrich uranium more than 20 percent or 80 percent (the level needed to create an atomic bomb),’ he said in a speech broadcast live on state television.
‘But we don’t enrich (to this level) because we don’t need it…
‘When we say we do not manufacture the bomb, we mean it, and we do not believe in manufacturing a bomb,’ he told the crowd. ‘If we wanted to manufacture a bomb we would announce it.”
“There are those who stand against us because what they want is to control the Middle East and to control the world,” Ahmadinejad said. “And an independent Iran, a free Iran, a developed Iran, a powerful Iran will naturally be a challenge for their goal. And that is why they are hostile to the Iranian nation.”
Thousands of supporters had been brought in on buses to hear Ahmadinejad speak.
Internet speeds around the capital have already dropped dramatically this morning as the government tries to foil demonstrations against the regime.
State television showed live footage of crowds carrying Iranian flags and pictures of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei making their way to Azadi (freedom) Square in central Tehran, where the main gathering is held.
Opposition members went on rooftops late Wednesday and shouted Allah-u-Akbar (‘God is greatest’) in protest – echoing similar cries after the disputed June election as well as anti-shah protests more than three decades ago.
The reports could not be verified independently because journalists working for foreign media were escorted to Azadi Square and are not at liberty to cover opposition rallies.
The opposition leaders have promised to join street rallies, including the Green movement founder and former presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi.

Please Hashem, save us from this rosho!
My son is learning now in Jerusalem. I have not heard anything yet from the State Department advising him to come home.
Flatbush Bubby – and if you do, you’d bring him home?
I hope not.
There is NO safer place in the world to be than learning in Yerushalayim.
I’m also nervous!! My daughter is in seminary in Yerushalayim. We also have a lot of relatives there. We must have Bitachon! We must daven to Hashem!!!! He is in charge!!!!!!! Not this crazy man from Iran. Hashem, please help us, please protect us from all our enemies!!!!!!
I’ve been a YWN lurker for some time But now that Flatbush Bubby has confirmed that Hashem Himself reads Yeshiva World News, I had to register!
This Maniacs speech today doesn’t change anything at all. The entire world knows that Iran wants to build a bomb, but sit back and do nothing at all.
Yeah sanctions, fat lot of good that will do.
The state dept is not going to issue a warning based on this fools speech today.
Never Again!????? Where is Kahane when we need an honest, strong leader like him? I tell you where he is. He was murdered by the same organization that is pulling the strings today because they knew he was on to them.
Secondly, this Achmaddoginjihad has lied by saying he had nothing to do with nuclear weapons. Then he said he does have something to do with nuclear weapons with an arrogant dare…etc.
Netanyahu tried rallying support from back in the Bush days when Bused used Israel for a stealth Syrian mission, and in return, Netanyahu asked for America’s support to clip Iranian nukes, and Bush said, “No”.
So, while Clinton could have gotten bin laden (ys), Bush and Obama could have stopped achmaddoginajihad (ys). Where does that leave us?
We want the leader of Iran assassinated! We do not need a sloppy, counter-productive rules of engagement interaction for 20-something year olds to die and become crippled, heaven forbid.
Mostly, we have to pray because the alleged good leaders of the world are frozen in fear about how to respond to an enemy who is gung ho about dying for their sinas chinum.
This is all our fault. We elected a naive community organizer to preside over our nation. We selected this incompetent commander-in-chief to lead the dialogue with the terrorist regime. This is the direct results of those ‘incentives’ and other concessions we have given them. Elections bring results, results have consequences…
#6, with all due respect, in direct contrast, the opposing candidate, John McCain, raised in a military family whose father was a Naval Admiral, a graduate of Annapolis Naval Academy, himself, a Viet Nam Vet, a hero who withstood torture as a prisoner of war that whose pain could have been mitigated had he sold out on his men, was against waterboarding, against military intervention, and has never been on record as having any point of view regarding the conflict in the Middle East. I suspect he would also lay dormant during this time.
I dare say, little Sarah Palin would muster a more courageous stance than the rest. Who woulda thought so? Other than that, Rudy would have been the man had not aliens taken over his body and replaced his guts with mush.

This is the “big punch”?
Gimme a break.
Ahmadinnerjacket’s power is crumbling from within, so he has to bluster from without.
20% enrichment does not a bomb make. His centrifuges are breaking down, he has no spare parts, he doesn’t have enough yellowcake to make squat, and all of his big “technological breakthroughs” are mostly paper studies.
So he goes about repressing his people by shutting down the Internet, which will ensure his regime will collapse.
Shazam:
Halevai!!!!!!!
That is all wishful thinking. His regime is not crumbling. He’s just like Stalin yemach shemo. He will start mass murdering anyone who dissents.
Iran has all the money, resources and technology necessary to make the bomb. Its only a matter of time and id say by 2011 they will probably have one.
AinOhdMilvado, one does not rely on miracles. I will leave it up to my son to follow the guidance of his rebbeim. Hashem Ya’azor!
I am less afriad of Irans nukes then I am of the rising antisemitic incidents all over the world and the rising power and support of the antisemites.
