Former Democratic City Councilman David Weprin kept a family tradition alive Tuesday night by winning a special election for the State Assembly.
Weprin easily beat his Republican opponent, Bob Friedrich.
The seat in the 24th Assembly District, which comprises part of Queens, has been held by both his father and brother.
In recent days, the Weprin campaign was criticized for mailings it sent out featuring swastikas and calling Friedrich an extremist.
The Weprin campaign says it wanted to draw attention to the fact that Friedrich opposes hate crime legislation.
Special elections were also held to fill open seats in Suffolk, Nassau and Westchester counties.
The winners will hold the seats until the end of the year.
The outcomes will not affect the current Democratic majority in the Assembly.
