WCBSTV: Surveillance Tape May Lead To Break In Horrific Brooklyn Arson

Five people died on Saturday in Bensonhurst in a murder by fire.

On Monday night surveillance video taken from a nearby store could help led investigators to a suspect.

CBS 2 HD has obtained exclusively the surveillance video police are using in their investigation. What we found was an individual approaching that building at exactly 2 a.m. The fire was reported almost 30 minutes later.

Now, no suspect has been named in the homicide nor has a description even been released by police. We do know that investigators are looking carefully at this video.

On the surveillance video, you can see a man with a black coat, dark jeans and bright white shoes. He is carrying a light colored object in his hand, walking toward the building.

At 2:29:05, an individual who appears to be the same man walks briskly, almost running, away from the building. This time carrying nothing and later putting a hood on.

Investigators have examined this video several times. Police, not yet ready to call the man a suspect, are asking anyone with knowledge of who set the fire — and why — to step forward.

At this point, the motive for this wrenching multiple murder by fire is unclear.

Five people were killed, including Miguel Chan’s wife, Luisa. She died saving her two children. Her daughter suffered a fractured skull as she was thrown out the window in a car seat. Her 2-year-old son survived without any injury. Her husband held his boy tightly as he reunited with survivors of the fire who helped rescue his children.

Most of the tenants who lived in the building are Guatemalan immigrants. Police believe potential witnesses may be too afraid to come forward because of their immigration status.

Twenty people lived in the building. There have been questions as to whether the building had violations. Today the family who owns the building told CBS 2 HD there were none and they are cooperating.

The question still remains, why. The surveillance video may shed light on what transpired in the half hour leading to one of the most devastating fires ever in Bensonhurst.

What they do know is that someone set the fire in the front stairwell of the building, blocking any access to escape out of the front door.
