Yeshivishe Shechita Launched In The United States

The yeshiva world now has a place in the shechita world, with the launching of Lamms Mehadrin, a yeshivishe beef shechita that is supervised by the Chicago Rabbinical Council and the Orthodox Union, and approved by the KCL of Lakewood.

It is produced in Wellington Kansas, home of AD Rosenblatt Meats, Har Nof, Heartland Kosher, and other  brands. The shochtim and bodkim learn and have
learned in BMG Lakewood, Yeshivas Telz Chicago, Yeshivas Hanegev, Yeshivas Torah Vodaas, and other prominent yeshivos.

“It is a great opportunity for the yeshiva world to have something of its own, something to which it feels a connection”, said Rabbi Sholem Fishbane, Kashrus Administrator for the Chicago Rabbinical Council and a talmid of Yeshivos  Telz Chicago and Mir Yerushalayim.

“We look forward to inviting down Roshei Chabura to have hands on shimush as they learn the sugyos of shechita and traifos”, he said. Other plans include a close connection and sensitivity to chumros and hanhagos of the yeshivishe oilom.

The label is named after Reb Psachya Lamm, z”l, the great grandfather of proprietor Yaakov Rosenblatt, himself a talmid of RJJ Edison, South Fallsburg and BMG Lakewood. Reb Psachya was the first Glatt Kosher butcher in America and had a respected butcher store in Williamsburg for many years.

Many people remember the success he had in standing up to the Unions, which were a major impediment to high standards of Kashrus in the early days of shechita in America. Rosenblatt said the program is named in tribute to him.

The production is personally overseen by Rav Zvi Fishbane shlita of Chicago. Rav Fishbane is  a well known talmid chachom with over thirty years experience in the shechita world and mechaber  sefer Hameilitz Beinosom on Targum Yonasan Ben Uziel.

  1. Interesting
Rabbi Fishbane says “yeshiva world to have something of its own”
Not entirely R’ Pesachya Z”L was a Shinover Chasid
Not surprising today when one of the Roshei Yehiva of BMG is a descendant of the Chasam Sofer etc.

  2. I hope this is a shloshim yom before purim joke.
    Yeshivishe shechita!!!!
The term chassidishe shechita had nothing to do with the type of clothing the shochtim wear or which community they beloned to.
In order to be a yiras shomayim one must study chassidus which teaches about the giver of the Torah, not just the dry wisdom of the Torah the way one studies math. BMG etc are talmudical colleges where they don’t know who the nossein hatorah is.
A chassidishe shochet must have a beard and must study chassidus every single day. His knwledge of Targum Yonason ben Uziel doesn’t even come next on the list. All that matters is yiras shomayim. It is known that a yiras shomayim can pick up even the slightest bump in a chalef, something a lessesr yiras shomayim will simply never feel. Someone who uses a chalef in the morning to shave off his tselem elokim r”l and thinks of his latest ‘chidush’ that will make him the next godol despite the fact that it argues with all the rishonim (aka “Yeshivish” learning), should not be trusted with feeding yiddishe kinderlach.

  3. To #1: I agree. It also smacks of elitism and it it encourages more machlokes between misnagdim and chassidim. Today we need unity among klal yisroel to bring Moshiach not machlokes.

  4. Some more

Rav Breuer ZT”L the founding Rav of KAJ initially
was against establishing Galtt as the standard for his Kehila. Is there today any Galtt meat under KAJ?
The dayan at KAJ Horav Chaim Cohen who is in charge of Kashrus is a Gerrer Chasid. The administrator is a Vishnitzer Chasid
Do I have the facts straight? Correct me

  5. No group has a claim to more yiras shomayim. To denigrate a lamdan as lacking yiras shomayim is the ultimate in am haaratzus. How far the generation has fallen if a lamdan is denigrated as lacking yiras shomayim! Torah meviah lidei zerizus!

Most Litvishes shochtim don’t read sifrei chassidus every day. They read the Tevuos Shor every day, as is required by halacha.

  6. The concept of a more mehadrin shechita in the Chicago area is intriguing since Chicago shechita was far from mehadrin when the Chicago stock yards existed, actually barely kosher if at all. Having a shechita that alleges to be mehadrin is fine but why perpetuate the idea of divisiveness within klal yisroel. There’s a very good reason why the Orthodox world in general, from all sectors including very modern Orthodox, rely on so-called chasidishe shechita. It’s because of what #3 said, these shochtim just happen to be yirei shomayim which is Shulchan Orach’s first criteria. Rabbi Fishbane, a shechita of our own? Does this mean that the yeshivish yungerman who learned 10 blatt of Kesuvos and 12 blatt of Kidushin and 8 blatt of Bava Metzia in his 4 years of post high school learning will now actually rely on 1 year study of Yoreh Deah?

  7. i would like to know where do they expect to get “Yeshivishe” shochtim from i dont recall any yeshivah guys looking to get a job let alone be a shochet and i dont think any of the yeshivisha yeshivos have a program to teach hilchos shechitah so at the end of the day they will ahve to use chasidishah guys to be there shochtim and bodkim so what will make this yeshivish that some yeshivishe guy will be making a profit ?

  8. WHOA!!! # 3 “daastorah” (Not!). You write “In order to be a yiras shomayim one must study chassidus which teaches about the giver of the Torah…”

Are you kidding me?? Following your convoluted reasoning, we must therefore presume that the Vilna Gaon, Chofetz Chaim, Chazon Ish, Rav Shach etc etc were not yerei shomayim (chas v’shalom to even talk like that!!)

No, in order to have yiras shamayim, one must – get this – HAVE YIRAS SHAMAYIM!! That’s all there is to it! No matter how one gets to that level. One needs to be steeped in Torah and Mussar.

And FYI, why do you assume that Yeshivishe people do not have beards? The bachurim, perhaps. (PS I come from a very litvishe family where 3/4 never ever shaved). Presumably the shochtim will have a hadras panim.

  9. Remember those days when advertisements were based on quality, price and service? I just love how Kashrut became an advertising method (in other words: a Kardom Lachpor Ba). Everyone advertises a different Chumra mentioned in some Shut Sefer that was never accepted (or even an entirely made-up Chumra). Chasidish Shechita included Satmar, Belz, Kloizenburg etc. then we got Chabura, now we got Yeshivishe Shechita. Names like Machmirim and Mehadrin pop up and become hot-items. Every other Rav or Kollel guy that’s interested in making some money opens up a Hechsher and makes sure he gets enough PR so that he is considered viable.

Rabosai, it’s time we start working on the basics!

  10. I was tempted to comment on the moronic nature of #3’s post, but I won’t, I’ll just reiterate one line from it: “BMG etc are talmudical colleges where they don’t know who the nossein hatorah is”. Why should I belabor the obvious – the ignorance and sinas chinam ooze out of every word!

(This genius probably holds that before the Baal Shem everyone was eating tarfus!)

  11. “In order to be a yiras shomayim one must study chassidus”

First, “Yiras Shomayim” means “fear of heaven” while a “yarei shomayim” means “one who fears heaven”. So you must have meant the latter.

Second, the Vilna Gaon and many others far greater than you don’t agree with your contention, so it takes some nerve to say that one cannot be a yarei shomayim unless one studies chassidus.

That is elitist, arrogant, and ignores the many baalei yiras shomayim throughout the thousands of years before the Baal Shem Tov brought Chassidus to the Jewish nation.

So, according to you, every non-Chassid, from the greatest Rosh Yeshiva down to the most novice of talmidim, is not a yarei shomayim if he has not learned chassidus. That’s a pretty massive amount of L”H (Motzi shem Ra?) in one sentence.

But, being true yireiei shomayim, they would probably forgive you anyway, especially since you are likely speaking out of innocent ignorance rather than malice.

As far as shaving “shaving their Tzelem Elokim” (G-d has a beard, CH”V?), I’m sure you know the sugya (oh, that’s for BMG guys, not you; sorry), but there are many great people who shave and people greater than probably anyone alive today paskened it was muttar.

And your almost blasphemous denigration of “yeshivish learning” is astounding in its audacity. Where is it written that a chidush is one that argues with rishonim? Chidushim can, perhaps reconcile one rishon with another or reconcile an Achron with a different Rishon. Or, perhaps, rely on a rishon to say something that argues with an achron. And besides, that’s your *definition* of “yeshivish learning” and your reason to denigrate it and those who study it?

With the denigration of so many segments of klal Yisrael, your post certainly doesn’t sound like it could have been written by a yarei shomayim.

  12. #3 just from reading your comment we see you should hardly be the one to define yiras shomayim for us. (From a chassidishe woman)

  13. #13: I would rather know whether the shochtim will be skilled and “Yirei Hashem V’sonei Betzah”. I worry about the trustworthiness and skill of a shochet, rather than worry about the beard of the shochet.

  14. FYI – the KCL has NEVER “approved” this meat – and they have never agreed to let their name be used in any approval process. The KCL “MAY or MAY NOT” allow the product to be sold in shops under their Hashgocho.

Much Hatzlocho to any product that helps the Kosher consumer.

  15. #9 daaastooorah musar givs you yiras shamayim think twise before you right musar just billds your yeshus
and #11 he just tickit you off its time torelize the truth
