A group of rescuers from New York City will be honored for their heroic efforts in Haiti.
The elite team made up of members of the FDNY and NYPD was instrumental in some dramatic rescues. The group is trained to respond to catastrophes involving the collapse of heavy steel and concrete.
The team previously worked at ground zero and in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Gustav. The 80 search-and-rescue specialists have experience working in collapsed buildings. The unit is one of 28 federal Urban Search and Rescue teams around the country, and members can live for days out of backpacks filled with supplies as they dig into the wreckage.
The team triumphed, to say the least.
Hours spent digging through rubble yielded six rescues, including an 8-year-old boy.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg will honor the team’s work during a ceremony at City Hall on Tuesday morning.
