Why is the Greek Orthodox Patriarch Seeking Clemency for Benizri?

Some are wondering what exactly has prompted the Greek Orthodox Church Patriarch to seek clemency for a former chareidi MK and cabinet minister, in this case, Shas’ R’ Shlomo Benizri. While there are various opinions, the fact remains a formal request to pardon Benizri has been filed by the Greek religious leader with President Shimon Peres and Justice Minister Prof. Yaakov Neeman.

Benizri is well-known for big heart and generosity, always giving to the less fortunate, seeking to help those in need, the daily Ma’ariv quotes the Greek Patriarch as writing in his request to the senior officials. It is pointed out the senior Greek religious official’s position in Israel places him in charge of church-owned real estate, including much of the Government Precinct and areas including the Chief Rabbinate’s quarters.

As a rule, the Greek Church does not involve itself in state affairs, making the news of the clemency request even more unique.

The Greek Patriarch explains he is motivated by an acknowledgement of good regarding Benizri, reminding the president that during his tenure as health minister, Benizri assisted an Orthodox Christian family, arranging healthcare when it was required and even arranging for monetary assistance for families when the need arose.

Benizri is serving a four-year sentence after being convicted of accepting bribes, fraud and breach of trust, has according to many been abandoned by party leaders, who have all but ceased visits to him in prison.

  1. deepthinker ” . . . Secular Israeli officials look up to Goyim . . . while they hold religious Jews in contempt . . .”

Shallow Nonsense. Most thinking people are properly suspicious of ideological zealots of any stripe. Don’t confuse rabid political ideology with theology.
