Hundreds of thousands of people have died in Haiti’s earthquake, the prime minister told CNN Wednesday. Haitian authorities said the powerful quake destroyed most of the capital city of Port-au-Prince. A top envoy called it a “major catastrophe.”
Meanwhile, Daniel Saban, who heads Israel’s Foreign Ministry Latin American desk, is leading the team dispatched from Israel to Haiti on Wednesday. Among those traveling are members of the IDF search & rescue team and personnel from the IDF Medical Corps, who will be establishing a field hospital.
Brigadier-General Shalom Ben-Aryeh, who heads the search & rescue team, announced 50 members of the elite team will be traveling to Haiti to assist wherever possible.
Magen David Adom has also announced it will be sending a relief team that will work with International American Red Cross officials in Haiti.

My father A’H was a patient in a few hospitals during his last years of life. I frequently observed the blatent anti-semitism expressed both verbally and physically by Haitian staff (you could instantly identify them by their language) in these settings. My father was mistreated many times and I always told him that I would file a complaint. He was an intelligent person, a survivor, far more knowledgable and experienced than I will probably ever be. Seeing this event in Haiti unfolding reminds me of what my father’s reply was whenever I suggested to file complaint. He used to state (in yiddish): “The RBSH”O leaves no debt” and “they will have a “. It’s all falling into place now.
