Police: Ex-NYPD Commissioner Hit Woman, Drove Off

safir.jpgA former New York City police commissioner has been accused of backing his SUV into a pregnant woman, then driving away.

Police said Howard Safir bumped the woman with his Cadillac Friday afternoon in Manhattan. She was treated for a bruised shoulder, but wasn’t seriously hurt.

Police detectives decided not to press charges. They said Safir didn’t know he’d hit someone. The victim told a different story.

Joanne Valarezo told The New York Times that both she and a passenger in the SUV yelled at the driver for being careless before he drove away. She said she didn’t know who he was until informed by a reporter.

Safir was police commissioner from 1996 to 2000.

  1. If he had been anybody but Safir, he would have been arrested and placed into irons. There needs to be an outside investigation of the decision not to charge the former Police Commissioner. Cadillacs have sensors that would have warned him she was behind him.

  2. I’m sorry, but if a vehicle is too large for an individual to be aware of whether or not they hit something, they should think about using a Smaller mode of transportation.
When in possession of a drivers license, you have the responsibility to know what type of vehicles you are capable of operating.
If his defense is “I didn’t know I hit anyone,” that should not excuse him for at Least taking responsibility for hitting this pregnant woman, and all the pain and suffering he may have caused her.

  3. Pedestrians are retarded. if you see a car backing out of a space or backing up forwhatever reason and you decide to walk behind it then you deserve to be hit.

Safir should NOT be charged for someone elses stupidne. And a person who obviously wanted to be hit deserves to be hit. The problem with many New Yorkers is all they see is $$$$$$$$$$. Most New yorkers think how they can get hit by a car and just sue people and make money.

Just like drivers have to drive defensively so should pedestrians use their brains if they have any and not walk behind a moving vehicle nor jay walk. You take your chances and get hit then deal with it and stop complaining.
