NYC officials are urging the state to abandon a drilling plan they say would threaten New Yorkers’ water supply.
The Bloomberg administration says the state plan to allow natural gas drilling on land near upstate reservoirs poses “unacceptable risks.”
The administration is echoing findings by the Department of Environmental Protection.
At the City Water Board Meeting this morning, DEP officials presented several nightmare scenarios.
The report says drilling on private land within the watershed could contaminate drinking water or diminish the water supply.
Governor David Paterson says there will be hearings on the issue.
“We will listen to all the points of view. We’ve actually extended the public comment period because of the grave concern that so many who we trust, like the mayor, are raising in this issue,” Paterson said.
Regulators in Albany are expected to finalize drilling plans next year.

This may be “junk science” but it may be valid. However other states are doing this sort of drilling, so it might be prudent to let them be the “guinea pigs” – if it doesn’t mess up their water supply, then New York can drill away. Cheap drinkable water in urban areas is probably needed more than natural gas, at least at present.
akuperma, the E.P.A. is heavily influenced by the Grand Poobahs of the Arabian peninsula who view any type of American exploration for fossil fuels and refinement thereof to be a competitive threat to their own natural resources.
Hey, akuperma, does the rest of your fellow thugs of the S.E.I.U. and A.C.O.R.N. also are recipient of foundation money from the very same despots?
From what I heard, they only want to block drilling in the 9% of the Marcellus Shale which is close to the watershed. The other 91% would still be available.
Hey bubby, my friend Zelig who lives in Binghampton is counting on this drilling deal to go thru. He says he can use the money real bad. He is hurting as is the rest of the upstate dwellers in this weak economy. The drilling would be a blessing to him. He is counting on it.He is sitting on 9 acres of property that might turn out to be a goldmine if the drilling rights come thru.
