Bernie Madoff Moved to Hospital After Being Assaulted [UPDATED]

madj.jpg12/23/09 4:20PM EST: Ponzi schemer Bernard Madoff has been moved to the medical wing of the federal prison in Butner, N.C.

Butner spokesperson Cathy Elsea said that Madoff was transferred to the Federal Medical Center on Friday, Dec. 18. The 71-year-old Madoff, who is serving 150 years on multiple fraud convictions for running a $65 billion scam, has been imprisoned at Butner since July.

Neither Elsea nor Madoff’s lawyer, Ira Sorkin, would disclose why Madoff had been moved. “The potential reasons for an inmate to transfer are numerous,” Elsea told ABC News, “and we do not release those specific reasons.”

UPDATE 12/24/09 10:25AM EST: ABC11 reports that Bernie Madoff was treated for serious injuries consistent with an assault.

Sources told ABC11 the disgraced financier was treated at Duke hospital in Durham last Friday and discharged eralier this week.

According to sources, he had facial fractures, broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

Prison officials won’t confirm that. They say the 71-year-old is in the medical clinic at the prison in Butner.

YWN has independently confirmed with sources at the jail that Madoff was in fact assaulted.

  1. hey why don’t we make a rally to get him out of jail.

I am joking. this man caused hundreds if not thousands of people harm just let him be

  2. #2 — He is listed in Bureau of Prisons records as prisoner number 61727-054. Hashem Yisborach will know for whom you’re davening.

  3. There are certain things someone can’t do tshuva for. What would you be saying tehilim for? that he can come out and enjoy the millions he stole?

  4. #6 – Please dont take it personally but based on your name alone, it’s apparent that you really dont care about other people. That said, Hashem may be looking directly at you and your aveiros and saying “…(#6 did things)…that someone can’t do teshuva for.” My suggestion is that before you criticize Madoff, you aught be 100% sure that you have no sins. You wouldn’t want others looking at you and saying there are some things that (#6) can’t do teshuva for…

  5. Doing Teshuva (means return) for theft requires returning the stolen object. This is a Mitzva both Bein Odom L’Makom and Bein Odom L’Chaveiro. Mr. Madoff has the theoretical potential to do Teshuva. Let him recognize his sin, admit (confess)it, and resolve not to repeat it. Those will be steps in the right direction. Then he must return each dollar to each victim.

  6. 8. I agree there is chilul hashem here, but lets not paskin about whether he can do teshuva, even for cases where you cant it is still better to think you can

    10. I didnt say he did, I said maybe he would/ could

    11. I agree

  7. Chilul HaShem? Will any individual, let alone an entire group (read 10), say if this is what HaShem’s Torah and His people are all about, let me have no part in it? If not, then it is not a chilul HaShem. The use of that term so loosely is possibly a bigger chilul HaShem – it certainly minimizes and cheapens the severity of it.

  8. Mr. frum not crum, he actually did confess and all that. He was his own wistle blower. He could have skipped town long before anyone caught on to his scheme. He obviously didn’t want to rob people, and his conscience wouldn’t allow him to run off.
As for davenning for him, I don’t get the issue. Do you people have no sense of just punishment?! Yes he deserves to sit in jail, but why can’t we daven for him to be well? It sounds like those middle ages popes’ curses on the Jews. They just go on and on. They don’t have a concept of Midda b’Midda.

  9. dlb:

Well that’s the way it should be. A yid is a yid no matter what, he is still hasham’s child. (i’m not defending Madoff he is indeed a disgrace, however hasham has more aggravation if a yid sins. Why shouldn’t we?)

  10. #13, if Madoff was a goy, he WOULDN’T be crucified again and again in the comment pages of all the OTHER media. But since he’s a yid….

  11. If someone steals from many people, or does harm to many people, doing complete teshuva is almost impossible because they can’t trace everyone who they harmed.

Either way, no one can judge the people who were personally harmed by him, and expect them to be so forgiving so quickly. Although it is very nice that people are able to get past that, he did create a tremendous chillul hashem and harm many yidden.

  12. #14 – I am certainly not talking about our own who, as you say, will look and chas vesholom say as you stated. And, if my message was understood that he chas vesholom can’t do teshuva, then, my own teshuva is necessary, because who am I to pasken anything. Unfortunately, we are in a galus whose antisemitism is always, at best, under the surface and Madoff brought it above the surface. I live in an un-insular, non-inclusive neighborhood where people who were once tolerant (and only tolerant) started showing true colors once Madoff (et.al.)hit the news. Many people from the outside do not look at him as a crook, they don’t think – they look at him as reflective of the Jews.

  13. #16.

The reason that he turned himself in was because among his victims was the Russian Mafia. He chose Maximum Security and being alive, as opposed to being rubbed out.
