Dozens of car accidents caused by freezing rain have been reported across Upstate New York – including Orange, Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, Sullivan, Ulster & Orange Counties.
The NYSP Monroe barracks was operating at the scene of at least 25 accidents on Route 17 – and that’s just in their patrol area. The Times Herald Record reports that Route 6 is closed and Route 17M is closed between Chester and Monroe due to down power lines.
One NYSP Trooper told the Record: “Route 17 is a sheet of ice. The highway is impassible. People shouldn’t be driving right now.”
A Catskill Hatzolah Coordinator spoke with YWN and said to inform folks to try and not travel. “Many people are currently making their way from Upstate NY to the NYC area, and should not be driving right now.”
“It’s treacherous out there, and it’s best for people to just wait until the storm clears up.”
Parts of Interstate 84 were reported closed in Dutchess County.
Temperatures are expected to rise into the mid-40s by the late afternoon before dipping back below freezing overnight, forecasters said. It could cause black ice on the roads during the morning commute.
Some of the other road closures included:
The Saw Mill River Parkway in both directions in front of the Westchester County Police headquarters is closed due to patches of ice, Westchester County Police told LoHud.com.
The Hutchinson Parkway northbound near Interstate 287 reported closed.
Portions of the Bear Mountain Parkway reported closed.
The Palisades Parkway from Exit 12 to the Bear Mountain traffic circle was closed due to numerous accidents and icy conditions.
