As soon as the Kol Yisroel Areivim initiative took off with electrifying speed with its origins in Israel, American Jewry vied for its swift arrival in the states and is now expanding the revolution.

As many are familiar with the incredible activities of the Vaad Harabanim L’inyanei Tzedaka, it has never ceased to inspire the community with its ongoing efforts to alleviate the plight of the poor, especially the widows and orphans struggling within our populace. The continuation of setting up funds for orphans had become prohibitively costly and even more embarrassing to these families who were already suffering enough from their personal losses. What’s more, the cost of the campaign that consumed thousands of dollars could have well been directed to the widows and orphans themselves.

Enter Kol Yisroel Areivim. A novelty ambition set up by the Rabbanim as a communal response to tragedy, KYA serves to link one family with another in a rare mutual alliance.

No one likes to think of a tragedy striking, but if, chas vesholom, the worst were to happen, who would provide for the family? How would the family manage without a main breadwinner? Facing reality is harder today than ever what with severe financial circumstances affecting many families, and life insurance is simply not on the list of matters being patronized.

Now, in a way that unites Jews across the spectrum more than ever, groups of sixteen thousand families become members of the U.S. chapter of Kol Yisroel Areivim, which serves to give peace of mind to its participants by guaranteeing funds in the case of yesomim. In the event of a tragedy occurring in one of these families, each of the remaining families in the group has agreed to contribute six dollars per orphan, with a maximum $24 outlay per month. The plan is devised to include no monthly fees, and constitutes pure tzedaka hence funds can be paid from ma’ aser. Behold the solution that results in a total of $100,000 per orphan.

A successful initiative. Eretz Yisroel. Europe. Canada. And now the U.S. The world Jewish response to Kol Yisroel Areivim has been astounding. Jews everywhere are flocking to join. In Israel, orphans have unfortunately benefited from KYA and although they still mourn their deceased parents, they do not suffer from poverty. Over $4,000,000 has already been distributed in Israel, demonstrating the vast success of this program.

“When I was informed that a member of my group had unfortunately died from complications of the swine flu,” says a staunch supporter of KYA, “and that there were ten orphans, I felt pained, but I also felt a tremendous sense of satisfaction. Kol Yisroel Areivim was working – and I was part of it. I felt like such a vital part of Klal Yisroel – like I really counted, and I was really making a difference.”

Another contributor is quick to add that “in the back of my mind, I keep thinking that I’m doing this not only for the orphans, but also for my children. If something happens to me or my wife, they will be provided for.”

To date, not one of the member families in the U.S. has needed to make use of its services! Baruch Hashem, it appears that simply joining is a segulah for arichas yamim, because in the six years since its inception in the United States, there has not been one funds collection necessary.

In each instance, a vaad of Rabbanim is convened to determine exactly how to proceed with funds distribution. Thus, every transaction is meticulously overseen and every penny is utilized in the most efficient way possible.
