NYC: Group Calls For Tougher Laws In Hit-And-Run Cases

nypdn.jpgFollowing a recent string of deadly hit-and-runs allegedly caused by unlicensed drivers, victims’ families are calling for tougher laws against driving without a license.

A group called Transportation Alternatives held a rally at City Hall to ask Albany to pass a law to automatically impound vehicles of drivers with suspended licenses.

They also want to ensure drivers without licenses are automatically charged with a felony if they cause an accident that hurts someone.

The outcry comes a week after two separate hit-and-runs killed three people.

The man who hit and killed an elderly Staten Island couple walking to church last weekend had his license suspended 29 times.

And the man who struck and killed 42-year-old Sonia Powell in the Bronx last weekend had his license suspended four times.

Transportation Alternatives also wants the city to create an office of road safety, so the NYPD can better enforce the laws.

The Department of Motor Vehicles says 10 percent of all crashes in New York are caused by drivers with suspended licenses.

  1. They should raise the level of felony for hit-and-run too. I think it is only a Class D or E felony. One of our chashuvo lawyers please help me out on this one.
