Felder: Time Running Out for ECB Relief

felder.jpgBrooklyn, NY — New York City Council Member Simcha Felder (D-Boro Park, Midwood, Bensonhurst) reminded homeowners and businesses that the City’s Penalty Relief program, which offers relief for those in default on Environmental Control Board (ECB) violations by eliminating costly additional penalties, late fees, and interest, ends December 21st. The penalty forgiveness program could reduce debts owed by up to 67 percent for some businesses and homeowners.

“This program helps ease the strain on New Yorkers facing pricey ECB fines in these difficult times,” said Felder. “I urge everyone with outstanding violations to take advantage of this opportunity while they still can.”

Violations covered by this program include dirty sidewalks, failure to post permits, failure to properly separate recyclables, illegal posting, failure to restore a street cut and sidewalk obstruction. Applying to participate in the program does not commit an applicant to resolving all outstanding violations, but any violations not resolved by December 21, 2009 will remain subject to late penalties, interest charges, and enforcement action.

In order to qualify, violations must be in default and have had a hearing date scheduled before May 1, 2009. Participants must apply by December 21st and may do so online at www.nyc.gov/finance, by dialing 311, or by mail addressed to: NYC Department of Finance, 66 John Street, Room 104, New York, NY, 11038 and with the header: Attn: NYC Penalty Relief Program.
