CPSC Announces Largest Crib Recall In History

crib1.jpgThe Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced the largest crib recall in United States history, involving cribs with dropdown sides, fearing they may be unsafe, even deadly.

The CPSC, in cooperation with Stork Craft Manufacturing Inc., of British Columbia, Canada, today announced the voluntary recall of more than 2.1 million Stork Craft drop-side cribs, including about 147,000 Stork Craft drop-side cribs with the Fisher-Price logo. The recall involves approximately 1,213,000 units distributed in the United States and 968,000 units distributed in Canada.

In a press statement, the CPSC urged parents and caregivers to immediately stop using the recalled cribs, wait for the free repair kit, and do not attempt to fix the cribs without the kit. They should find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby. Consumers should contact Stork Craft to receive a free repair kit that converts the drop-side on these cribs to a fixed side.

  1. Over thirty years ago, the Sachnut in E”Y gave out free cribs with drop down sides. Either injuries or deaths R”L didn’t occur, or they weren’t reported. Children are vastly safer today than they were decades ago. They, and their parents, just don’t know it. I also survived cars with steel dash boards and no seat belts. The illusions of danger cause many to lose sleep unnecessarily.

  2. I wouldn’t define it as a danger worthy of great note, unfortunate though these deaths are. Statistically, one is more apt to die by:

    Electrocution
    ~500 Deaths / Year
    Getting Hit by a Car
    ~1,100 Deaths / Year
    Complications with Medical Procedure
    ~3,000 Deaths / Year
    Choking
    ~3,200 Deaths / Year
    Drowning
    ~3,500 Deaths / Year
    Fire
    ~3,700 Deaths / Year
    Poisoning
    ~9,500 Deaths / Year
    Falling
    ~15,000 Deaths / Year
    Car Crash
    ~44,000 Deaths / Year

Stork Craft Manufacturing is initiating a voluntary recall of these cribs. Voluntary is the operative. If a clear and present danger was posed by their products, the firm wouldn’t rely on consumers to affect a repair with the parts kits on their own. Instead they would pick up the tap for the shipping to have the cribs repaired by trained employees in their plant. We can thank the American Bar Association for all this much ado over a minuscule chance of an injury or worse. There are far more dangerous things in the home that are seldom given any thought. That bottle of drain opener in the kitchen cabinet under the sink comes to mind.
