NY State Police To Launch Seatbelt Enforcement Blitz Over Thanksgiving Holiday

nysp.gifYou don’t want to get caught driving without your seatbelt on over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

The State Police are cracking down with their Buckle Up New York – Click It or Ticket campaign. It will be enforced throughout Troops F & K in the Hudson Valley and Troop T along the entire length of the Thruway.

The goal is to get more drivers and passengers to buckle up every trip, every time, and ultimately save lives. Throughout the Thanksgiving holiday period, troopers, deputies and local police agencies across New York State will conduct safety restraint checkpoints and dedicated roving patrols in this effort.

“Thanksgiving travel can be dangerous, and seat belts are the best defense against crash-related injuries and fatalities.” said Troop F Commander Major Edward Raso. “I’m urging everyone to avoid alcohol if driving, make sure everyone is buckled up every time, and to exercise caution while driving on our state’s roadways this holiday period. Law enforcement will be out in force to protect the safety of our roads and highways.”

The Thanksgiving holiday weekend traditionally kicks off the winter travel season in New York and is one of the most heavily traveled times of the year. According to Raso, across the U.S. during the 2008 Thanksgiving holiday period, 389 passenger vehicle occupants died in motor vehicle crashes, including 231 during night time hours. Almost half of those that died were not wearing seatbelts.

“People die needlessly in traffic crashes every year, and state troopers, sheriff’s deputies and local officers will be working together to help prevent these unnecessary tragedies”, he said.

  1. Those doing carpool must be very careful because a lot of times the car/mini van doesn’t have a sufficient number of seatbelts. Since there is no bus service on thanksgiving carpool is the only way for yeshiva kids to get to school especially the little kids who need a seatbelt by law.

Hopefully the blitz will only affect those driving on major highways which is not so nogea carpool to yeshivos.
