[PROBLEM HAS BEEN CORRECTED – UPDATE BELOW] A computer glitch is causing major flight delays all over the East Coast.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration and air traffic controllers, a flight system developed a problem early Thursday morning which is affecting the computer system’s ability to process flight plans electronically.
Many flights are experiencing delays because controllers are inputting data manually.
The problem is believed to involve the Nadin system which processes all flight plans that go to every single airport and flight control across the country.
The system is located in Atlanta and generates the flight plans for all flights on the East Coast. The backup system is in Salt Lake City.
The entire air traffic control stystem on the East Coast is slowed to about 40 to 50 percent of what a normal day would look like.
Officials are telling passengers to expect delays at all three major tri-state area airports, and ultimately, at all major airports across the country because of the natural ripple effect.
UPDATED INFORMATION: FAA officials say failed computers that delayed flights across the country are now working again.
The air traffic controllers union says the computer failure involved both of the Federal Aviation Administration’s computer centers in Salt Lake City and Atlanta.
Even though the FAA said Thursday the problem had been solved, Doug Church, a spokesman for the National Air Traffic Controllers Union, said controllers were still entering flight plans manually into computers in some locations.
Passengers are being asked to check the status of their flights online before going to airports.

Kindly update if this problem is still in effect. It is Nogaya L’maasa.
Flight delays are the norm all over the East Coast. I dont know why they just dont make the departure times a half hour later than what they expect them to be.
Whose computer caused the glitch? Was it the computer or the person stationed at the computer? Will refunds be given?
First the traffic lights, then metro and now this?!?
It’s terrorists 🙂
