3:15PM EST: [ALL UPDATES IN EXTENDED STORY] At least seven people are dead and 12 wounded in a shooting at Fort Hood in Texas, the base’s public affairs office told NBC News on Thursday.
The official would not give his name nor additional details. It was unknown whether victims are soldiers or civilians. One gunman was reportedly in custody and another was on the loose, NBC News said.
NBC affiliate KCEN in Waco reported that the second suspect may be holed up in a building on the post.
The base was reportedly on lockdown. Two nearby school districts were also being locked down.
Fort Hood is adjacent to Killeen, and 60 miles northeast of Austin. The sprawling complex is home to at least 4,929 active duty officers and 45,414 enlisted. Civilian employees total nearly 9,000.
UPDATE FROM CNN 4:20PM EST: One of the shooters has been apprehended, Fort Hood spokesman Sgt. Maj. Jamie Posten told CNN.
“At this point we’re looking for the other shooter,” Posten said. Asked for a description, he said, “we’re trying to develop that information.”
Fort Hood was asking people on post to stay away from windows…….The incident took place at the sports dome, now known as the soldier readiness area…..
FBI agents are being scrambled to the scene to assist……
On the Fort Hood Web site, the word “closed” is posted with the statement, “Effective immediately, Fort Hood is closed. Organizations/units are instructed to execute a 100 percent accountability of all personnel.”
Fort Hood is the Army’s largest U.S. post, with about 40,000 troops. It is home to the Army’s 1st Cavalry Division and elements of the 4th Infantry Division, as well as the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment and the 13th Corps Support Command. It is located near Killeen, Texas.
UPDATE FROM FOX NEWS 4:30PM EST: Two shooters at Fort Hood military post reportedly kill 7, leave 20 injured; Army officials have not confirmed whether the victims were civilians or military personnel.
UPDATE FROM CNN 4:50PM EST: Two gunmen in military uniforms shot and killed as many as nine people and wounded as many as 20 at Fort Hood in Texas on Thursday, officials said.
One of the shooters has been apprehended, Fort Hood spokesman Sgt. Maj. Jamie Posten told CNN.

UPDATE FROM ABC NEWS 5:50PM EST: The suspected gunman was identified by ABC News as Major Malik Nadal Hasan.
Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, R-Texas, told Fox News that military sources informed her that the gunman was about to be deployed to Iraq.
The shooter was killed and two other suspects, who are also soldiers, have been apprehended, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone said.
The general said there were “eyewitness accounts of more than one shooter,” and the others were tracked to an adjacent facility.
UPDATE FROM POLITICO AT 6:00PM EST: President Barack Obama promised “answers to every single question” about Thursday’s shooting at Fort Hood after an attack by three U.S. service members left 12 soldiers dead and 31 wounded.
Speaking at the Interior Department, Obama said he had already conferred with Defense Secretary Robert Gates about the attack and would continue to receive updates.
“We don’t yet know all the details,” Obama said. “What we do know is that a number of American soldiers have been killed and even more have been wounded in a horrific outburst of violence.”
“These are men and women who have made the selfless and courageous decision to risk and at times give their lives to the rest of us on a daily basis,” the president continued. “It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an Army base on American soil.”
Obama’s remarks came at the conclusion of the Tribal Nations Conference hosted by the Interior Department and the White House. He told his listeners – leaders from many of the 564 federally recognized American Indian tribes – that he had discarded his prepared remarks in light of breaking news.
“I planned to make some broader remarks,” he said after brief introductory comments. “But as some of you might have heard there has been a tragic shooting at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas.”
