City officials deny that there are plans to close firehouses.
The New York Post, however, reports today that firehouse closings are one idea the city is considering to plug a $5 billion budget gap next year.
Another measure could be lowering staffing from five firefighters to four at 60 engine companies across the city, which city officials also deny.
A spokesman for Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that neither plan is on the table, and a Fire Department spokesman agreed.
Last year, the city originally wanted to close 16 firehouses, but the mayor and City Council reached a budget deal to keep them open.
Some observers tell the Post that those 16 firehouses could be under threat of closing again this year.
Other sources say as many as 25 could be targeted for closure.

If true this would be the ultimate in insanity and should never be allowed to happen. I do not trust the word of Michael Bloomberg anymore..this is an election year..he will say anything to get re-elected. G-D bless the FDNY, they are there for us 24/7 365 days a year!
