The NYPD is once again planning to step up enforcement of the ban on cell phone use behind the wheel.
A 24-hour crackdown on drivers using phones without a hands-free device will start at 12:01 a.m. Thursday and last 24 hours.
Drivers caught in violation of the law face a fine of $130 ($200 for cab drivers).
Two daylong crackdowns earlier this year resulted in more than 16,000 tickets being issued. In the recent August ticket-blitz, the NYPD issued 7,432 tickets.
In a typical day, the New York Police Department issues about 500 summonses to drivers using cell phones.

This is a long time coming. People should use hands-free devices like blue tooth or ear buds. Cell phone use while driving endangers lives! Period.
Cell phone use AND text messaging while driving! It’s SO dangerous, it not only endangers the driver’s life but others as well. I was just recently hit by a car that was making a left turn onto ocean parkway. I was crossing the street on a walk signal and he was supposed to yield to me. I wonder if he was on his cell phone, otherwise I don’t understand how he really didn’t see me. He’s 17 and just got his license… that might explain something.
