New York State Troopers are cracking down this week on drivers who use handheld cell phones. And starting next month they’ll be going after drivers, distracted by text messages.
Stop a driver. Write a ticket. Return to patrol and repeat as necessary. That’s the plan.
For the next four days “Operation: Hang Up” has troopers on patrol, scanning the Thruway for drivers using handheld cell phones.
Troopers said many of the drivers they catch are from out of state. And they claim they didn’t know you can’t talk on your cell behind the wheel in New York State.
And soon … you won’t be able to do text either. A statewide ban on texting while driving will take effect in three weeks.
But while a cop can stop you just for using a handheld phone, you can only be pulled over for texting if you do it while committing another moving violation, such as speeding.
Troopers expect to write more than 800 tickets by the time “Operation: Hang Up” concludes on Thursday.

WAY TO GO!!!
#6, I concur. People should at least invest in an earbud or blue tooth head piece. They should change the law that one can be pulled over for no other reason than using a cell. Anyone with a cell knows how much it compromises safety. SAFETY! There is no turning the clock back once there is, heaven forbid, an accident.
