Police are searching for a robbery suspect who escaped from a lower Manhattan courthouse on Wednesday morning where he was facing a trial.
The suspect, identified as 54-year-old Ronald Tackman, was on trial for second degree robbery when he fled from the Manhattan Supreme Court at 100 Centre St. shortly after 9 a.m. Investigators say the suspect made his escape by posing as a lawyer.
Tackman’s own lawyer, Joseph Heinzmann, told the Daily News that the suspect, taking a page out of the movie “Catch Me If You Can,” will be tough to catch.
“I don’t know where he is, but he’s a very intelligent man,” Heinzmann told the Daily News.
Police say Tackman was wearing a three-piece suit when he escaped, allowing him to appear less like a suspect and more like a lawyer in the building on business. A source told the Daily News that an officer even stopped him, but mistook him for an attorney.
“Counselor, what are you doing here?” the officer asked, the source said.
Police and court officers are on the scene actively searching for Tackman, who is charged with five separate counts of robbery and another robbery in Queens.
