4:45PM EST: Google’s Mail Client, Gmail was suffering some intermittent outages this morning. They assured users at 8:18 am that they were working on the issues and expected a fix for all users in the near future.
As of 3:30 this afternoon (EST), Google’s Gmail came crashing down. The website has been replaced with an optimistic message that for more than the last 30 minutes has been saying “Please try again in 30 seconds.”
Google’s GMail quietly came out of Beta in early July (after 5 years) with Google saying that the app was now quite stable and functional. Whether that move was premature or not is anyone’s guess at this point as Google has not yet advised the reason for the gMail crash.
Google’s gMail edged past AOL recently to become the 3rd-largest email client edging past AOL but still trailing Yahoo and Hotmail.
The usually rock-solid reliability of Google may no longer be taken for granted though after this afternoon’s crash has left millions of users email-less.

Just checked my gmail account. No problem.
They’re back up.
Google already provides an easy backup- it’s called Google Gears or offline access. It works in the background and keeps everything up to date when you’re offline… or if the service is down, so you can still access your old stuff.
or you can download all your mail with POP3 or IMAP.
