While forecasters says Tropical Storm Danny has weakened so much over the Atlantic Ocean that it is barely even a tropical storm any more, it is still bringing some wet weather and strong currents to the city.
Danny’s winds have slowed to near 40 mph, but forecasters expect it to increase in speed later today.
Even though the storm is not expected to make a direct hit on the city, it could bring strong winds, rain, flash flooding and more severe conditions at the beach.
“We’re telling people who want to go to the beach, be careful of the riptides. Those are going to be serious, like they were last week with Hurricane Bill,” said Office of Emergency Management Commissioner Joseph Bruno. “And really just be cautious. It’s going to be a rainy weekend.”
Hurricane Bill shut down city beaches last weekend.
As of this hour, there is no word from the city on any beach closures this weekend. But the Parks Department says closures are possible and all beachgoers should use extreme caution.
“As weather conditions are changing quickly, it is essential that New Yorkers be extremely cautious at our beaches,” said Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe in a statement. “As always, beachgoers must obey the instructions of lifeguards, police and other parks and security personnel.”
The Parks Department urges New Yorkers to call 311 or visit nyc.gov/parks for updates before heading to the beach.
