[Click HERE for photos of the storm] The National Weather Service is predicting a series of moderate to strong thunderstorms to develop this evening into the overnight period. Some of these storms may be severe bringing hail and damaging winds. Additionally, Tornado activity is not out of the question for this event for NYC. These storms will be developing in a tropical air mass and are expected to produce heavy rainfall. This, in combination with saturated grounds from recent heavy rainfall will likely lead to flash flooding across portions of the area.
The National Weather Service in New Jersey has issued a tornado warning for Middlesex, Morris, Somerset, and Hunterdon Counties until 6 p.m.
A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for the entire tri-state until 11 p.m.
Approximately 0.5 inches of rain is expected to fall during this event, however rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are possible in locally heavier thunderstorms. Some areas of the City may experience rainfall rates of 1 inch per hour for at least 60 minutes. The heaviest period of thunderstorm activity is expected now through midnight tonight, however thunderstorms may pop up during the overnight period.
Sustained winds are expected to be out of the south at 10 to 15 MPH with gusts up to 20 MPH possible. Stronger gusts approaching 60 mph are possible in severe thunderstorms.
There is the potential for Urban Flash Flooding associated with this event. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect Citywide until late tonight. The NYC Flash Flooding Plan has been activated for this event.
