DA Hynes Announces Grand Jury to Investigate the Death of Esmin Green at Kings County Hospital Center

er.jpgBrooklyn, NY – Kings County District Attorney Charles J. Hynes today announced that a grand jury investigation has begun regarding the death of Esmin Green on June 19, 2008 in Kings County Hospital Center’s psychiatric emergency room – reported HERE on YWN.

Ms. Green, 49, arrived at the hospital by ambulance at 6:30 AM on June 18, 2008. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia and psychosis, and ordered to be admitted involuntarily that morning, according to the DOI report. She was still awaiting care 24 hours later when she collapsed from a blood clot and died on the floor of the psychiatric emergency room.

DOI’s findings revealed that there was a breakdown in Ms. Green’s care during four medical shifts on June 18th and June 19th, 2009. Personnel failed to administer blood work and an EKG, failed to monitor vital signs, and doctors failed to conduct a medical examination. The Grand Jury is expected to be hearing evidence until early Fall.

The following is a NY1 report from July 2, 2008 following the incident:

Several employees at Kings County Hospital have been fired after a disturbing videotape surfaced showing a woman dying in a waiting room, while workers did nothing.

The New York Civil Liberties Union released the video, which was taken two weeks ago. It shows 49-year-old Esmin Green slumping out of her chair and going into convulsions as workers and fellow patients walk by her. She had been in the hospital’s psychiatric ward waiting area for more than 24 hours. She was later pronounced dead.

The NYCLU also says hospital workers fudged the time scale of the incident on Green’s medical records.

Now the group says the hospital, which is run by the city, will give patients in the waiting room a checkup every 15 minutes, and limit the number of patients to 25 at a time.

  1. Disgusting, and traditional (non-folk) medicine is riddled with profiteering tactics also. Psychotropic drugs are high-powered and can be very dangerous. Better to work on lifestyle changes and avoid the whole scene – there are many alternative organizations, like the Anne Copeland Institute, started by past-patients of the ‘mental-health industry’. Most of these do offer a much better – and safer, way back to sanity and happiness within Torah and common-sense living.

  2. That is why we need Hatzoloh, this would never have happened if the Hatzoloh ambulance rushes a patient to the ER they make sure that a doctor is ready and waiting for the patient to be treated when he arrives, also the devoted Hatzoloh volunteers stay with the patient to make sure that every thing is OK.
