First the fares went up, now the tolls. Beginning Sunday, July 12, 2009, at 3 a.m. the tolls for the MTA’s bridges and tunnels in New York City will go up.
For example, crossing the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, which connects Brooklyn and Staten Island, will now cost $11 cash.
The MTA expects some delays at toll plazas as drivers get used to the new toll amounts.
“Our goal, as always, is to keep the traffic moving safely and smoothly for our customers, though there is always a transition period when toll rates change, especially in cash lanes,” said Susan Kupferman, president of MTA Bridges and Tunnels. “Nearly 75 percent of [our] customers pay tolls with E-ZPass and, now more than ever, we encourage our cash customers to get E-ZPass to save time, money and gas.”
E-ZPass users whose tags were issued by the New York customer service center get a discount at all crossings.
