The NYPD Special Operations Division is conducting a counterterrorism drill in New York Harbor between noon and 1 p.m. Thursday.
It will simulate a report of shots fired on a New York Waterways vessel, in the waters between Liberty Island and Ellis Island followed by lost contact with the crew. The drill also will include an NYPD helicopter.
Members of the Emergency Services Unit will drop in on the boat from a helicopter, while other officers taking part in the exercise approach on police boat and try to board the ferry.
The United States Coast Guard will also be a part of the drill, which should last at least an hour.
The NYPD is the largest police force in the United States, established in 1845. The NYPD is responsible for the five boroughs of New York City.
